Every team plays 3 matches in the group stage — one against each other team in their group. Points are earned based on the result of each match:

⚖️ Tiebreakers — When Two Teams Have the Same Points

If two or more teams finish with the same number of points, FIFA uses the following tiebreakers in this order to determine ranking:

6	Fair Play (Disciplinary)	Fewer yellow and red cards. A red card counts more than a yellow.
7	FIFA World Ranking	Last resort — the team ranked higher by FIFA before the tournament wins the tiebreaker.

The 2026 World Cup is the first ever with 48 teams. The tournament runs in two distinct phases: a Group Stage (round-robin) followed by a Single-Elimination Knockout bracket. One loss in the knockout stage and you go home.

⚡ Knockout Round Rules — No Draws Allowed

In the group stage, a draw (tie) is a valid result worth 1 point each. But in the knockout rounds, every match must produce a winner. If the score is level after 90 minutes:

🎯 How Matchups Are Determined

The Round of 32 draw is pre-determined by group finish — not random. The bracket follows a fixed seeding structure so that, for example, the 1st-place team from Group A plays the 2nd-place team from Group B (or a qualifying 3rd-place team). This means teams know their potential path to the Final before the tournament even begins.

The 8 best third-place teams are slotted into specific bracket positions based on which groups they came from — a system designed so the bracket stays balanced and no quadrant is overloaded with strong teams.

Advancement rule: Top 2 teams from each group advance automatically (24 teams). The 8 best third-place finishers across all 12 groups also advance, for a total of 32 teams in the knockout stage.
